Worth Beyond the Screen

Christopher Worth smiling with his acoustic guitar

Our essence is revealed in the moments when the cameras are off, when the applause fades, and when we stand alone with our reflections.

One of my all-time favorite people is my friend Chris Babson, who somehow emerged from the halls of Stanford with both charm and a guitar. I met him at some undergrad party that I can’t quite recall — probably because I was busy trying to avoid the guy in the Hawaiian shirt who wouldn’t stop asking me about my spirit animal. But Chris was different. He was like a breath of fresh air amid the half-hearted small talk. We hit it off instantly and became very close.

Chris is a singer and songwriter, which means he’s essentially a modern-day bard, wandering from gig to gig with little more than a microphone and an acoustic guitar. I’ve seen him turn a living room into a concert hall, and I can honestly say he’s capable of blowing your mind. If only he could have blown some of the dust off our college textbooks, we might have all graduated with higher GPAs.

After we graduated, I had the extreme good fortune of having him as my roommate, a stroke of luck I never take for granted. Best roommate I ever had. While most of my college experience revolved around late-night cramming and existential crises, Chris turned our apartment into a musical sanctuary. We would invite friends over, and he would serve up a feast of songs while I struggled to keep the chips from spilling everywhere. It was a delightful chaos, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Chris has rebranded himself as “Christopher Worth,” which is both an upgrade and a philosophy. This name shift is like Chris: he’s all about self-worth and encouraging others to embrace their own quirks and values. In a world that often feels like a tangled mess of expectations and noise, it’s refreshing to see someone boldly proclaim their worth. Honestly, it’s never been more important to realize one’s value, especially when everything around us seems to be growing increasingly complex and absurd. So here’s to my dear friend Chris, Christopher Worth, who reminds us all to find joy in our individuality and to embrace our own self-worth.

Is true worthiness something that is reserved solely for those cloaked in capes and adorned with accolades?

Who are the worthiest among us? In the depths of our hearts, many would instinctively point to superheroes. These figures, cloaked in tight pants and purpose, embody the ideals we aspire to — courage, justice, and the unwavering commitment to protect the vulnerable. Superheroes keep the stability of morality and inspire us to be the best versions of ourselves. They invariably do the right thing, even when doing the right thing is the most difficult choice and comes at a high personal cost.

In the stillness of our daily lives, we are invited to ponder a profound question: Is true worthiness something that is reserved solely for those cloaked in capes and adorned with accolades? Where does our sense of value truly originate? In our world, we have, unfortunately, begun to measure our worth with the number of comments on our social media posts, or the number of friends and followers we accumulate online. We find ourselves captured in a web of comparison, measuring our value against the curated lives of others.

Each day, we are bombarded by a stream of updates from our friends — updates we never sought, yet they arrive uninvited. We are overwhelmed with images of fancy dinner parties, endless vacations, and the dazzling lives of celebrities captured in fleeting selfies. In this relentless flow of information, we become preoccupied with how our own lives measure up. How do my posts fare against theirs? Am I receiving enough likes, enough engagement? In this illusionary landscape, we begin to question our humanity, wondering if we are truly worth something in a reality that often lacks authenticity and genuine value.

Our essence is revealed in the moments when the cameras are off, when the applause fades, and when we stand alone with our reflections. It is in these quiet revelations that we discover our true worth, transcending the superficial to embrace the richness of our authentic selves. Our worth is born from our honesty, selflessness, humility, and righteousness.

The worthiest among us are those who, in the softest whispers of existence, extend their hands to the vulnerable. They are the guardians who offer solace, the gentle shoulders upon which weary souls can lean. Their goodness is woven into the fabric of reality, manifesting in actions that speak louder than words. The most remarkable among them are often those who choose silence over proclamation, whose kindness flows like a hidden river — unseen, yet profoundly felt.

The worthiest among us are not those who shine the brightest in the spotlight, but those who bring light into the shadows.

This seems like a contradiction, doesn’t it? We measure our worth by people around us, yet our true worth comes from the goodness that does not seek the spotlight. It thrives in anonymity, leaving the recipient blissfully unaware of the source of their comfort. It is a dance of altruism, where the act of giving is its own reward.

Worthiness is not a currency measured by likes or followers, nor is it adorned with the glitter of external acclaim. It is in the authenticity of our actions, the sincerity of our kindness, and the humility with which we embrace our imperfections that our true value is revealed. Our worth flourishes in moments of honesty and selflessness, in the gentle touch that offers comfort without seeking recognition.

The worthiest among us are not those who shine the brightest in the spotlight, but those who bring light into the shadows. They are the silent guardians, the quiet heroes whose deeds weave a tapestry of love and compassion. Their presence is felt in the tender gestures that go unnoticed, in the unseen acts of goodness that ripple through the world with profound impact.

As we navigate this tangled web of expectations and digital illusions, let us find the courage to look beyond the surface. Let us embrace the messy, beautiful reality of our lives, celebrating the richness of our authentic selves. In doing so, we reclaim our true worth, rooted in the essence of who we are when all pretenses are stripped away. By nurturing a sense of self-worth grounded in kindness, understanding, and authenticity, we discover the profound beauty of our shared humanity, and our worth.
