Casting Spells for a Transformative Year

A glowing figure climbing a staircase and reaching up to hold a star

Are we not all wizards in our own way, striving to rise above the weight of our shortcomings?

As the final days of 2026 slip through our fingers like grains of sand, I find myself pondering a simple question — one asked by many friends: What is your resolution for the year to come? It is a simple question that lingers, unraveling slowly, revealing layers of meaning not just for me, but for all of us as we stand on the threshold of a new beginning.

I’m, at heart, a seeker of magic — whether in the pages of a book, the glow of a pixelated screen, or the vastness of a star-filled sky. The kind who loses track of time in comic book stores, gets emotional over pixelated video game characters, and draws wisdom from Asimov and Tolkien. I have also been enchanted by the world of Harry Potter. There is something in that universe — a spark of wonder, a touch of wisdom that often finds its way into my reflections and conversations. I have yet to meet a soul untouched by the magic of Harry Potter. Even now, as I wander through stores like Miniso or Imaginarium, I find shelves filled with trinkets from that enchanting world, as if the magic itself refuses to fade. Decades may have passed since the stories reached their conclusion, yet they continue to captivate our hearts and remind us that the extraordinary can always be found within the ordinary.

For this reflection on New Year’s resolutions, I’ve decided to let the boy wizard within me take charge. There’s something poetic about seeking guidance from a fictional school of magic — a place where the impossible becomes possible and the ordinary transforms into the extraordinary. As I considered the year ahead, I found myself inspired by Harry Potter’s first spell: Wingardium Leviosa. A spell that defies gravity with a single phrase and the swish of a wand. This spell is more than a lesson in magic — it is a metaphor for life. Are we not all wizards in our own way, striving to rise above the weight of our shortcomings, trying not to trip over the robes of our own imperfections?

Rising is never easy, for the world is heavy with monsters that seek to hold us down. The monsters in our world are not like the mythical beasts of Harry Potter — giant spiders, werewolves, or spectral Dementors. No, our monsters are far more insidious. They are liars, thieves, cheaters, and murderers. They are those who place power above integrity, wealth above humanity, and destruction above creation. These monsters walk among us, their faces hidden behind familiar masks. They sit at our tables, share our bread, and weave themselves into the fabric of our lives. Quietly, they poison our hearts with their shadows, draining the light from the spaces they inhabit. I, too, have encountered these monsters. I laughed with them at celebrations, welcomed them into my home, and trusted them with pieces of my soul. It took time — sometimes too much time — for me to see the darkness lurking behind their carefully crafted masks. Perhaps it was my inclination to trust, to believe in the goodness of others, that blinded me.

This year, I believe the spell worth mastering is elevation — the art of rising, of becoming a better version of ourselves.

This year, I believe the spell worth mastering is elevation — the art of rising, of becoming a better version of ourselves, as though each step forward is another level reached in the great journey of life. But how do we rise? Not through grand gestures that light up the world for a moment and fade just as quickly, but through the quiet, deliberate choices we make every day. These are the steps, simple yet profound, that transform our journey into one of growth and light.

As someone who views life through the lens of practicality, I will make this journey easier for you to navigate. Here is my blueprint to elevate:

  • Don’t be a monster: Unless your heart is already consumed by darkness, in which case this resolution is not for you. Elevation begins with choosing not to harm others, and acting with kindness, integrity and compassion.
  • Recognize the monsters in your life: The power to rise begins with awareness. Identify the monsters in your life, and have the courage to step away from their influence. Their darkness is not yours to carry.
  • Surround yourself with good people: Goodness attracts goodness, just as darkness seeks its kin. When you meet someone for the first time, ask yourself, “Is this a good person?” Trust your instincts. They often recognize what the mind is too polite to admit.
  • Protect your circle of light: Your friends, your communities, are your sanctuary. These are the ones who lift you when you stumble, who light your path when the world feels dark. Guard this circle fiercely, for it is sacred.
  • Don’t engage in self-bragging: People can see through the veil of fakeness and insecurity that often accompanies self-promotion, especially on social media. While you may aim to impress, the result is often the opposite — it makes others feel worse and, in turn, makes them like you less. Elevation comes from humility, not the pursuit of applause.
  • Celebrate the triumphs of others: In celebrating the victories of those around you, you amplify the light in the world. Jealousy dims the spirit; shared joy expands it.
  • Choose forgiveness over resentment: Resentment chains you to the past, while forgiveness sets you free. It does not mean forgetting the wrongs done to you, but releasing their power to keep you grounded.
  • Extend kindness to strangers: A simple act of kindness — a smile, a gentle word, a moment of understanding — can ripple outward, lifting not only others but yourself.
  • Face your fears with courage: Fear is the gravity that holds us down, but courage is the wings that lift us. Each time you confront a fear, you weaken its hold over your soul.
  • Pursue your passions with purpose: Passion without purpose is a flame that flickers and dies. Find what sets your soul alight, and let it guide you toward meaning and fulfillment.

Elevation is not a destination but a journey. Elevation is a series of choices made each day. It is the gentle unfolding of the soul, rising inch by inch, until we find ourselves soaring above the clouds of doubt and darkness. Let this be a year of hope and lightness — a year where we leave behind the fears of yesterday and embrace the infinite possibilities of tomorrow. Let it be a year where we rise, not just for ourselves, but for those around us, lifting them with love, grace, and kindness. For in choosing to elevate — through acts of courage, generosity, and empathy — we inspire others to do the same. And in that shared ascent lies the most profound magic of all: the transformation not just of our lives, but of the world.

Together we are more. We are more beautiful. We are more powerful. We are more magical.

Let’s elevate together. Together we are more. We are more beautiful. We are more powerful. We are more magical.
